Legends collects three discs' worth of performances from Perry Como, including "Round and Round," "Magic Moments," "Catch a Falling Star," "Papa Loves Mambo," "Days of Wine and Roses," and "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." While the set features some amount of Como's best songs -- ones that he made famous as well as interpretations of standards -- it also includes more than its fair share of middling tracks, like his versions of "Something," "Close to You," and "Killing Me Softly With Her Song." Simon & Garfunkel recorded only five albums of studio material during their reign in the 1960s. Pop perfectionists, increasingly they sculpted records with extensive arrangements that made songs like "The Boxer," "The Dangling Conversation," and "America" more than mere pop songs, but compositions submerged in the delicacy of the art song. This collection is everything from those five albums, from the earnest early folk to the folk-rock that spawned their initial success ("The Sound of Silence") to the layered, methodical approach of their complex later work ("Bridge over Troubled Water"). Not the most modest title for an eclectic double CD album of jazz music covering a wide range of artists and styles of jazz music. This most certainly isn't the best jazz album ever, but it is a basic introduction to what jazz music is like, suitable for absolute newcomers, or occasional listeners who'd like a little jazz in their CD collection. The tracks are, for the most part, judiciously chosen - though there is a distinct bias in favour of music that will be well known to a large audience through use on adverts and television, rather than maybe representative work of the most important jazz musicians. In this respect I must quibble about a few glaring omissions, particularly in the work of early jazz masters. So there is nothing on here of Bix Beiderbecke or Jelly Roll Morton; and even later musicians of the Big Band era like Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller are omitted. Anyone coming to this collection should be aware that there is very little music from before the War. I wish there had been room on here for these and for something by two of my favourite artists, Charles Mingus and Coleman Hawkins. For these reasons I hesitate to give this double album an unreserved recommendation, but as I say, if you're new to jazz, this might be as good a place to start as any. By the end of this you'll have a good idea of whether jazz is for you or not and then you can investigate further.
